Neil is one of the best known charcutiers in the country, a master smokerOne of my favourite places to eat in Franschhoek—in the Cape actually—is Bread And Wine, the jewel in Neil and Tina Jewell’s diadem., and Tina is one of the most efficient front of house hosts you will meet in many a year. A visit there never fails to impress—if you can get in–especially in the summer months. Sitting outside under the trees is the best way to unwind. The added bonus is that you get to have the excellent wines of Môreson to accompany the food.
Since the beginning of the year the menu there has undergone some differences worth noting. The main difference is that the menu is no longer a la carte but consists of two choices , either R335 for 2 courses or R375 for three (starter, main, and dessert). There is also a children’s menu for youngsters up to the age of 12.
Among the starters are things like chilled beetroot soup with ginger walnut and apple, sweet potato red curry with deep fried calamari, and West Coast mussels with Café de Paris butter, all made in Neil’s inimitable style. The risotto of pine kernel, celery, and gorgonzola is a great vegetarian option and carnivores are well taken care of with mains of Blesbok with walnut tabbouleh and cherry jus and beef rump with mascarpone gnocchi, as well as other choices. The white chocolate and blackberry tart with caramel poached pear is a knockout. Neil’s famous charcuterie platter is also available as a main—ask for it.
